TUESDAY, DECEMBER 18

@@@@BOOK ORDERS--DUE TODAY:

Yep. I'll mail them in today.

@@@@WRITING FOLDER--DUE TODAY:

I passed writing folders out to everyone and we organized them to be graded. All of 2nd quarter's work was paper clipped.

@@@@SPELLING MID-TERM TEST--TOMORROW:

We talked though some ways you could study effectively for this test. One idea was to pick out the 20 hardest words and have someone quiz you on them while you write them out. Then, tomorrow morning, just review the words you missed out of those 20 hardest words. Seems simple!

@@@@NAMES/NOMBRES PAGE 4:

We read part of this short story aloud in call during the last 15 minutes of class. we will finish it tomorrow after the spelling test.

Monday, December 17, 2007

MONDAY, DECEMBER 17, 2007

@@@@BOOK ORDERS--DUE TUES:

These won't come in before Christmas break, but I'll still send an order in tomorrow!

@@@@RC TESTS--DUE by NOON THURSDAY:

I will be talking to each person who DID NOT pass the I CAN'T BELIEVE... RC test. That test was worth a quiz grade in this class. If you made a 70% or better on the test, it also counted as your RC Test requirement for this quarter. For those of you who did not pass it, you will still need to pass another RC test before this Thursday afternoon!

@@@@SPELLING MID TERM TEST--WEDNESDAY:

The 100 word, multiple-choice, Spelling Mid-Term Test (lists A--J) will be this WEDNESDAY!!!

@@@@WRITING FOLDERS--DUE TOMORROW:

Every student was given a chance to look through his/her writing folder today. These folders are due tomorrow. One page should be edtited and the green or purple editing sheet should be staled to that sheet (with the three questions answered). Also there should be 10 new pages of writing. LET ME KNOW IF YOUR POWER IS STILL OFF AND YOU CANNOT PRINT OUT PAGES FROM HOME!

@@@@LIBRARY CHECK OUT:

We do this every Monday! It is a good time to get an RC test taken!!!

@@@@10 MINUTE FREE WRITE on "YOUR NAME"--DUE at the END OF THE HOUR:

To prepare for a short story we will read tomorrow, we did 10 minutes of free writing over the topic of "YOUR NAME." What do you know about your name? Etc. I have more questions to lead you into thought if you need them!

I picked this writing up at the end of the class. Tomorrow I will read the ones that are volunteered before we read the short story.

Sunday, December 9, 2007

MONDAY & TUESDAY

I will be out of the classroom for Monday and Tuesday.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 7

@@@@MID TERM SPELLING ACTIVITY--DUE AT THE END OF THE HOUR:

The focus for today's class is to finish and hand in the mid-term spelling activity. If you are already finished and hand it in at the beginning of the hour, you have the following options...

@@@@30 MINUTE WRITING NOTE--DUE MONDAY:

Today I was willing to let students write in class for 30 minutes and I would sign off in their planner for the 30 minutes of additional writing. Other students just opted to do the 30 minutes at home, like usual. I will check for those signatures this Monday! REMEMBER...doing your editing counts toward 30 minutes of writing.

@@@@WORD ART:

For those finished with the spelling activity at the beginning of the hour, one option was to do "word art" like a graphic artist on some sentence strips of paper I have in my room. This is just another way to work with the spelling words and help decorate the room.

@@@@SSR:

For those finished with the spelling activity at the beginning of the hour, one option was to read your library book.

Students filled out as much as possible from their folders and then handed this sheet in for me to complete. I will hand this back next week and everyon who has tested out of the spelling mid-term test will know for sure when this sheet is returned.

@@@@SPELLING MID-TERM ACTIVITY--DUE FRIDAY:

Everyone has to do the spelling activities....right? Even if you end up testing out of the mid-term test. This activity is about categorizinf words according to patterns. You have class time today and class time on Friday to complete this. It will be collected at the end of the hour on Friday.

Tuesday, December 4, 2007

@@@@SSR:

Anyone who was already finished with the EDITING PACKET had extra time to read their own book.

Then...the next thing to work on is this worksheet printed on GREEN PAPER where you have three sections of editing practice. You should try to have ONE SECTION completed by when you show up to class tomorrow. You will have class time to finish up the other two sections. Friday, November 9, 2007

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 9

@@@@SPELLING TEST I

@@@@FINISH GUIDED READING SHEET--DUE @ END OF HOUR:

Each class had about 20 minutes to finish the reading and questions. I would say that about 3-4 kids each hour did not get finished. I still had all sheets handed in today.

Tuesday, November 6, 2007

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 6

@@@@SPELLING ACTIVITY I + FLASHCARDS--DUE TODAY:

I checked to see that all flashcards were completed and all spelling activities were completed. But instead of collecting the spelling activity, I went through the answers, calling on students to share their answers.

Make sure you study those flashcards for the test this Friday!

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 25

@@@@GRADED WORK:

I passed out your assignment folders today and you received your graded outline quizzes and the Spelling Test Review DEF Test.

@@@@WRITING LAB REQUIREMENTS:

This was your first time to see your writing folders since you handed them in two weeks ago. They are graded (of course) and today we wrote the new QUARTER 2 requirments inside the folder. Here they are:

GOAL #1--PRODUCE WRITING--10 pages by December 13

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 24

@@@@I CAN'T BELIEVE I HAVE TO DO THIS:

Today we started a novel unit. We will all be reading the novel, I Can't Believe I Have To Do This, this quarter. This is an RC book, so everyone will need to take an RC test over this book. Today I read the first two chapters aloud and everyone followed along. When we got to Chapter 3, everyone read that chapter silently. I asked some questions at the end of the hour to check for understanding.

There is no homework!

Thursday, October 18, 2007

THRUSDAY, OCTOBER 18

@@@@QAR SUDOKU ACTIVITY--DUE TODAY:

How is SUDOKU like reading? Does a Sudoku Puzzle have Questions, Answers, and Relationahips/Responses? What does a sucessful Sudoku player have in common with a successful reader??? Today's lesson will cause you to rethink puzzles and reading! This was done in class and handed in.

@@@@SPELLING DEF TEST:

After we got the instructions for the QAR Sudoku activity , you were given an opportunity to start and complete your SPELLING DEF TEST. I'm thinking I will have to put this on next Quarter's grade, escpecially if anyone is absent today.

@@@@MORE SUDOKU or SSR:

When you finish the Spelling Test and the QAR Sudoku, you may either read or try more sudoku puzzles. I tried to catch the handful of students who still have not passed an AR test. There is an alternative assignment available.

@@@@NO 30 MINUTE WRITING NOTE THIS WEEK:

This will start back up next week when we return to Writing Lab on Thursdays.

Wednesday, October 17, 2007

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 17

@@@@FINISH OUTLINE QUIZ II:

The main priority today is to complete Section II of the Outline Quiz today in class.

@@@@SUDOKU:

If you want to try your hand at Sudoku you may. Make sure you bring it back tomorrow to class though, finished or not. We will be talking about how Sudoku and reading go hand in hand.

@@@@SSR:

If you are finished with the Outline Quiz you could also read!

@@@@SPELLING TEST DEF--TOMORROW:

You have a review spelling test tomorrow (most of you do...) so you could also use extra classtime to STUDY!!!

Tuesday, October 16, 2007

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 16

@@@@SPELLING ACTIVITY DEF--DUE TODAY:

I'm a little disappointed. Most of the students did not complete this activity. It was so simple! It would have only taken about 5--10 minutes to finish at home! Come on Eagles....take care of business!

@@@@CORRECT OUTLINE QUIZ--DUE TODAY:

On the flip-side, I was very impressed with how well students did with their outline quiz. The mistakes that were made were silly mistakes. So that everyone has the opportunity to shine, I am handing these back today for corrections to be completed. If you got a 100% (alot of you!), you don't need to do anything but stick it to the refrigerator. If you had any errors, they are marked on your quiz. You need to correct the errors completely and return the quiz to me by the end of the hour.

@@@@OUTLINE QUIZ PART II:

This is the last work we will do with outlining. You are 100% on your own. I will give you SECTION 2 from the chapter on NORTH AFRICA and you will need to outline it in your own sheet of paper. I collected these at the end of the hour for safe keeping, but you will have classtime tomorrow to finish this up.

@@@@SSR

Monday, October 15, 2007

MONDAY, OCTOBER 15

@@@@GRADE PRINT OUT--EC TODAY:

I handed these to you on Thursday of last week. If you got it signed by a parent and brought it back today, it will be extra credit for you. YIPEE!!!

@@@@GRADED WORK HANDED BACK:

I handed back your graded spelling tests E and F today. You alredy had spelling test D in your assignment folder. Every student looked over his/her scores from those tests to determine if he/she has to take the DEF Review Test this Thursday (no school on Friday). When I collected the assignment folders individually from each student, I had the student tell me if they have to take the test or not.

@@@@SPELLING REVIEW DEF ACTIVITY--DUE TOMORROW:

Spelling activities are always printed on brown paper. This one is no exception. I tell the students that the activity is simply to help them get the words back in front of their face. It is not the best study tool though. To study well, students should locate their FLASHCARDS for lists D,E, and F. If you can't find them, why don't you study by making a new set of flashcards???!!!?? What a grand idea!

@@@@LIBRARY CHECK OUT:

This is our weekly trip to the library. Before we left, I had each student say outloud what he/she needed to accomplish in the library. I also reminded students about the RC test that must be passed by Thursday.

Thursday, October 11, 2007

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 11

@@@@SPELLING TEST F:

Yep. Just like every week.

@@@@WRITING FOLDER--DUE:

I walked around and collected these from each student. You will not have access to your writing folder for another week, as I need that time to grade them. You should have the equivalent of 6 pages of writing in the folder as of today.

@@@@GRADE UPDATE--EC MONDAY:

I handed out a grade print out that can be brought back signed by a parent on Monday for extra credit. The print out has an RC test/points individual update attached. You need to have an RC test passed by NOON of next Thursday!!!

@@@@NO 30 MINUTE NOTE THIS WEEK!!!!!

Due to the face that I have the writing folders and it is the end of the quarter, we will not do writing at home this week. If you already have the note, or want to go ahead and get the note for this week, that is fine. You can use it as a back-up for some other week!

Wednesday, October 10, 2007

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 10

@@@@SPELLING ACTIVITY F + FLASHCARDS--DUE:

I am taking a completion grade on the flash cards and collecting the spelling activity to look over.

@@@@OUTLINE POP-QUIZ:

WE have practiced outlining skills for several weeks. Today I am giving you a quiz over Chapter 16, section 1 of the social studies book. You of course can use the book and any other materials that could help you. If we need some time tomorrow to finish up this quiz, I will give you class time to do so.

@@@@SPELLING TEST F--TOMORROW:

STUDY THOSE FLASHCARDS!!!!!!!!!

@@@@WRITING FOLDER--DUE TOMORROW:

YES! Bring all of the pages you have written at home and you will place them in the writing folder. You will not have access to your folder after tomorrow. I will give the folders back to you the following Thursday.

Tuesday, October 9, 2007

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 9

@@@@SPELLING ACTIVITY F--DUE TOMORROW:

@@@BOOK ORDERS--DUE TODAY:

If I can get these orders in tonight, you may have the books by the end of the week!

@@@@WRITE OR READ:

Students had all hour to work on their spelling activity and flashcards. Only a handful of students completed them in class, but since we have RC testing due and Writing Folders due...there is PLENTY to work on in your spare time!

Monday, October 8, 2007

MONDAY, OCTOBER 8

BECAUSE OF A SHORTENED SCHEDULE (SPIRIT ASSEMBLY) AND THE UPCOMING END OF THE QUARTER, TODAY IS DEDICATED TO READING/LIBRARY TIME. GET THOSE RC TESTS TAKEN!!!!!

@@@@30 MINUTE WRITING NOTE--DUE:

I walked around and spoke with each student about this. 3rd Hour, especially has dropped the ball!!! Missing these five points each week can really hurt your grade!

Make sure all of your writing---even the writing from home--is in your folder by THIS THURSDAY.

@@@@BOOK ORDERS--DUE TOMORROW:

Bring in any book orders today or tomorrow!!!

@@@@LIBRARY CHECK OUT/RC TESTS:

We spent about 20 minutes in the library todat. Some kids took RC tests and EVERYONE was expected to read.

@@@@RC TESTS--DUE 10/18:

Every student needs to pass an RC test each quarter. The deadline is one week from this Thursday. If you are not able to take a test on the book, you can write up a full page summary complete with chapter summaries and an overall plot summary.

Friday, October 5, 2007

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 5

@@@@SPELLING TEST E:

These will be graded by Monday.

@@@@OUTLINE PRACTICE GRADED IN CLASS:

We finished these outlines this week in class. Today students graded their own outlines with highlighters, so that we could look for clear patterns in the mistakes we were making. We discussed those mistakes. Most of the students seemed to understand the process, but often forgot to capitalize correctly.

@@@@30 MINUTE WRITING NOTE--DUE MONDAY:

This is an important weekend to write...as the writing folders are due this coming THURSDAY. You must have 6 pages of writing. REmember to bring the note & signature from your parent this Monday!

@@@@SSR:

Most students really need to read any spare chance they have. The RC tests are due in less than two weeks.

Thursday, October 4, 2007

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 4

@@@@WRITING LAB:

We spent time talking about creative ideas based on real work events. Today I told the students about a news account of 3,000 people trapped in a gold mine in South Africa. They are not injured, but it will take almost two days to get all of them out of the mine. We brainstormed what it might be like if we were one of the trapped miners. Then we changed locations of where we were "trapped" and imagined if we were trapped in a McDonald's restaurant for 2 days....

Students had about 30 minutes for writing today.

As they wrote, I walked around and spoke with each student who has not yet passed an RC test.

@@@@WRITING FOLDER--DUE NEXT THURSDAY:

I reminded every class that the writing folder is due next Thursday. They are to have the equivalent of 6 pages of writing in the folder by that day. They should bring in the writing they have done at home during hte 30 minute writing times and place it in the folder too.

@@@@SPELLING TEST E--TOMORROW:

Study those flashcards!

@@@@BOOK ORDERS--DUE TUESDAY:

Click and Tab book orders were handed out today. Students should have their orders handed in by Tuesday of next week. Checks should be made out to SCHOLASTIC.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 3

@@@@GRADED WORK:

I handed out assignment folders and handed back two graded spelling tests---Spelling Review Test ABC and Spelling Test D.

@@@@GRADE UPDATE:

For anyone whose parents did not get to conferences for a grade update, I sent last week's grade home with those students. If those students bring the grade print out back tomorrow, signed, it will be extra credit.

ANYONE WHOSE PARENT CAME TO CONFERENCES AUTOMATICALLY GOT EXTRA CREDIT.

@@@@FINISH OUTLINE PRACTICE:

We spent the rest of the class period finishing up the outline practice from yesterday. I collected them back up and we will grade them on Friday after the spelling test.

@@@@SSR or WRITE!

It is only one week until writing folders are due and two weeks until the RC test has to be passed. You should use any extra time to accomplish these goals!!!

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 2

@@@@SPELLING ACTIVITY E + FLASHCARDS--DUE TODAY:

Today I walked around to each student, face-to-face, and collected the brown Spelling Activity E assignment. I looked at the flashcards, but am taking the grade this week strickly from the activity.

I also asked students who had not shown me their 30 minutes of writing yesterday if they had it today. It is a zero after today.

@@@@OUTLINE PRACTICE--in class:

I completed an outline of sections 2 & 3 of a chapter from the social studies text. I left our key words, and later also left out some of the key labels. This is classwork practice, so students are encouraged to work independently, but ask for help if they need it.

I collected these at the end of the hour because we will continue to work on them in class tomorrow. It is not homework.

@@@@SSR

Only a handful of student actually completed the outline today in class. They spent the rest of their time reading from their SSR book.

MONDAY, OCTOBER 1

@@@@30 MINUTE WRITING NOTE--DUE:

I walked around and looked for this note from a parent confirming 30 minutes of writing was accomplished this past week. Some students from every class have promised to have the note tomorrow!!!

@@@@LIBRARY CHECK OUT:

We went to the library to renew, check out, and take tests over library books. I also reminded every class that then end of the quarter is only 3 1/2 weeks away!

@@@SPELLING ACTIVITY E + FLASH CARDS--DUE TOMORROW:

We are ready for the next set of 10 spelling words! List E was written on the board, and every student has his/her own list too. We began making flashcards in class for the words. Students also received a simple spelling activity printed on BROWN PAPER. Students did not get both of these tasks done in class, so there should be about 10 minutes of homework tonight!!!!

Thursday, September 27, 2007

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 27

@@@@SPELLING TEST D:

These will be graded and available on Monday.

@@@@WRITING LAB:

Today in Writing Lab I showed students how I count papges for the writing folder. I selected folders at random and counted the number of pages in that folder in front of the students. The writing folder is due in TWO WEEKS. Students need to have 6 pages by October 11th!

@@@@30 MINUTE WRITING NOTE--DUE MONDAY:

Every student has indicated that he/she understands what the expectation is and how to bring the note in for credit. I look forward to getting those notes on Monday.

Wednesday, September 26, 2007

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 26

@@@@SPELLING TEST D--TOMORROW:

You have 10 flashcards....use them!!!!

@@@@SECTION I OUTLINE PRACTICE:

We started this in class yesterday and will be finishing it in class today. Students should keep the completed outline as a guide for the next assignment which will be outlining a similar section on their own!

@@@@SSR

Any class that gets done with the section outline before the end of class will be expected to read for the remaining time.

Tuesday, September 25, 2007

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25

@@@@30 MINUTE WRITING NOTE--DUE:

Because I was absent yesterday, everyone got an additional day to have this ready. If you forgot today, please bring it tomorrow!

@@@@SPELLING ACTIVITY D + FLASHCARDS--DUE:

I walked around and checked the homework. The only thing I gave a grade to this week were the flashcards. Look over those flashcards this week for the spelling test which will be on Thursday!!!!

@@@@PARTS AND WHOLES W/TEXTBOOK

I copied four pages from the social studies textbook. I selected a chapter that everyone has read recently in that class. We took highlighters and highlighted all the important information that creates "parts and wholes" in the text pages. Fortunately, the textbook places most of these importnat details in color or in big font!

When we highlighted the parts and wholes on those four pages, we began to create and outline of that highlighted information. We will finish this tomorrow. Ms. F. collected everyone's papers for safe keeping.

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 23

I WAS ABSENT THIS DAY, BUT HERE IS THE SCOOP:

@@@@30 Minute Writing Note--DUE TOMORROW

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 21

@@@@SPELLING REVIEW TEST ABC:

About 45 students tested out of this week's spelling review test. Good job! I will have them graded and ready to hand back on Monday.

@@@@OUTLINE CORRECTIONS--BRING BACK ON MONDAY (not homework):

We are looking at the outlines we created using food this week. I selected 5 samples (anonymous) and students are to correct the outline samples. Most students completed it in class and left it with me for later use. If it was not finished, the students just need to return it on Monday to complete then.

@@@@SSR:

Because most students completed the Outline Corrections with time remaining in class, every one was able to get a little reading done for about 10--15 minutes in class. Don't forget to take an RC test before the end of the quarter!!!!

@@@@30 MINUTE WRITING NOTE--DUE MONDAY:

Ok. Here it is again. Everyone needs to write for 30 minutes at home. Parents need to write a statement in the planner, on the writting, anywhere...that states that the student did/did not compelte 30 minutes of writing . and sign the statement. I will check for those on Monday.

Thursday, September 20, 2007

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 20

@@@@GRADED WORK:

We keep an assignment folder in the classroom of the graded work that is handed back in a quarter. Of course, students who want to take their graded work home to show a parent will be allowed to do so, but in the meantime, we keep everything in this folder.

Today I hnded back all the Spelling Tests (A, B, C) so that students could look over the scores and the specific words they missed.

I also reviewed the list of students who TESTED OUT of tomorrow's ABC Review Test. Those students will receive full credit for the test, but will not have to take it. They need to remain quiet during the test.

Students should have flash cards to review for the test.

@@@@RC TEST PER QUARTER:

Students are to pass one RC test each quarter. This is a minimum requirement across the grade levels at EMS. I touched base with all the students today about who had/had not passed an RC Test yet. Students have about 4 weeks left to get this done for Quarter 1.

@@@@WRITING LAB:

Every Thursday in Language Arts we take about half of the class period to write. Today I reminded them about Tuesday's assebmly where we had the privilege to read some excerpts from Rachel's diary, even an entry form the day she died. We talked about how the story of her life and its impact really could not have been fulfilled if she had not CHOSEN TO WRITE HER THOUGHTS DOWN. That's why I provide this time for kids to write. The thoughts in their brains deserve to be written down!

Wednesday, September 19, 2007

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 19

@@@@SPELLING REVIEW ABC ACTIVITY--DUE:

This was a simple word scamble and word find. I told the students that the activity was simply to remind tham of the 30 words that they will be tsted over on Friday. To study effectively for the test on Friday, students should utilize their flashcards.

@@@@LATE 30 MINUTE WRITING NOTES????

So many students forgot to have a parent write them a note about writing at home for 30 minutes (or forgot to write for the 30 minutes) that I will ask again today for those notes. This requirement will be a part of our weekly expectations.

@@@@PARTS & WHOLES:

Last week we discussed the fashion of a middle school student...breaking fashion down in to components(parts) of SHIRTS, PANTS, SHOES, ETC. Then we broke those parts down into their individual descriptions.

Today we are going to get some food items and will begin to practice a standard way of writing the parts and wholes on paper. We are working toward creating an outline of information.

NO HOMEWORK!

Monday, September 17, 2007

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 17

@@@@30 MINUTE WRITING NOTE--DUE TODAY:

Yikes!!!! Lots of students told me that they wrote for 30 minutes over the weekend, but only a HANDFULL got parents involved to jot a note in their planner. This will be a weekly requirement, so let's get in the habit! WE won't be having Language Arts tomorrow due to the kick-off, but students can show me the writing note on Wednesday for a late grade.

@@@@EC GRADE PRINT OUT--DUE TODAY:

I handed out grade print outs last Friday. If students showed them to their parents and got them signed, it is extra credit today only.

@@@@SPELLING REVIEW ABS ACTIVITY--DUE WEDNESDAY:

This week is a REVIEW TEST week. Many, many students "tested out" of this review test by scoring a 10/10 on each of the weekly tests. Those students still have to do this spelling activity for a grade, but on Friday they WILL NOT have to take the review test!!! YEAH!!!

Those who DO HAVE TO TAKE THE REVIEW TEST should locate their flash cards and study them.

@@@@LIBRARY:

Time to renew books, take RC tests, and locate new books to check out.

Friday, September 14, 2007

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14

@@@@SPELLING TEST C:

Students could test out of next week's review ABC test if they have scored a 10/10 on each of these weekly tests. I'll hand graded tests back on Monday.

@@@@GRADE PRINT OUT--EC MONDAY:

Get this signed by a parent and return it on Monday for extra credit. I have not yet perfected the entering of extra credit on our new gradebook system, so it is not recorded in the grade. I will record it as soon as I can figure out the system.

@@@@30 MINUTE WRITING NOTE--DUE MONDAY:

This is the first one due. This is what the blue letter sent home on Tuesday was all about!!!

@@@@PARTS AND WHOLES:

Today we looked at the attire of a classmate volunteer. We talked about the components of that classmate's clothing (Shirt, pants, shoes, etc.) and then talked about what parts made up each component (colors, styles, lengths, etc.) This was an introductory lesson to prepare for OUTLINING SKILLS which we will begin next week.

Thursday, September 13, 2007

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 13

@@@@WRITING LETTER--DUE TODAY:

Each student was to get a letter signed by a parent last night regarding the requirement of writing at home for 30 minutes. About 3/4 of each class brought these back signed. Please bring them tomorrow!

@@@@SPELLING ACTIVITY C--DUE TODAY:

I walked around and collected these to be graded later. I also talked with the students who did not have them completed. These assignments really only take about 15 minutes to complete.

@@@@FLASHCARDS--DUE TODAY:

I just did a "visual" individually on these to see if each student completed them. I hope the students will pull these flashcards out tonight and look over them so as to be ready for the spelling test tomorrow.

@@@@SPELLING TEST C--TOMORROW:

YEP...be ready! Some students could test out of the review test next week if s/he gets a 10/10 on tomorrow's test!!!!

@@@@WRITING LAB:

Thursdays are our day to write in class. To help reluctant writers get started, I talked with them about how PROBLEM are a place to start. We brainstormed some different problems that could serve as a writing focus.

Wednesday, September 12, 2007

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12

@@@@WRITING LETTER--DUE TOMORROW:

I am sending home a letter that will need to be signed by both a parent and the student and brought back tomorrow. Basically, I wanted everyone to understand the 30 minute writing requirements for this quarter. Meeting these requirements each week will assume that we are all cooperating together toward the same goal.

@@@@SPELLING ACTIVITY C + FLASH CARDS--DUE TOMORROW:

The Spelling Activity C assignment is printed on a brown sheet of paper. Students are also receiveing 10 notecards to create the flashcards we do every week.

Tuesday, September 11, 2007

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11

@@@@MAP TESTING:

All students were given another day to complete the MAP testing (reading test given each year in the district). There were only a very small number of students who will be needing to have a third day to complete the test. Those students will be called out of one of their classes in the coming weeks to get the test completed. The office staff are handling the make-ups.

I will discuss scores with students and parents as the opportunity arises.

@@@@LIBRARY CHECK OUT/SSR:

Students have one month left before the end of Q1. Each student is required to pass at least one RC test from a book s/he reads this quarter. Students were given as much time as was left after their MAP test to read and take tests. Most students had at least 20 minutes to read. All of the students made good use of this time in the library except 2nd and 3rd hours. Step it up!

Monday, September 10, 2007

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 10

@@@@MAP TESTING:

We take MAP tests for reading two times a year. This test will help us see exactly what your strengths and weaknesses are in Language Arts.

Thursday, September 6, 2007

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 6

@@@@SPELLING ACTIVITY B--DUE:

I collected these to grade from every class but 2nd hour. In 2nd hour I graded tham on the spot.

@@@@FLASH CARDS--DUE:

I graded these on the spot for completion. Students should use them tonight to study for Spelling Test B. Students should hang on to all the flashcards made up to this point, since there is a review test in two weeks.

@@@@WRITING LAB:

Today we talked about how to take a list of memories (like in our life maps) and use one of them to start a writing idea. We talked about "what ifs..." Students had between 10--15 minutes to write today in class.

@@@@SPELLING TEST B--TOMORROW:

Please study!!!

Wednesday, September 5, 2007

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 5

@@@@SPELLING ACTIVITY B--DUE TOMORROW:

This is a weekly activity we do with our spelling words. You will find these activities printed on BROWN paper. Part of completing the activity includes completing the flashcards too. Students should bring the completed worksheet and flashcards to class tomorrow.

@@@@FINISH FLASH CARDS:

See above message!

@@@@SSR:

We are still trying to get in the habit of reading our library books when we a refinished with an assignment. Most students were able to complete all of the spelling work in class, so there was time to read.

Tuesday, September 4, 2007

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4

@@@@LIBRARY CHECK OUT:

Today we went to the library for about 15 minutes. Students were able to renew, return, check out, and take RC tests.

@@@@GRADE PRINT OUT--EC TODAY:

I walked around and collected grade print outs that were signed by a parent. I'm very pleased with how many were returned. These kids have alot to be proud of right now---good grades to show off! You can expect a grade print out like that about every other week.

Students also got their Spelling Test A graded and returned to them today.

@@@@FLASH CARDS OVER LIST B--BRING BACK TOMORROW:

The remaining time was used to look over our spelling words for this week and begin to make flash cards. The flash cards DO NOT have to be finished by tomorrow, but they do need to be returned to class tomorrow. Here's how we did the flash cards (same as last week):

Break into syllables (alternating color): AIS-LES
On the back, write out "pyramid" style:

A
AI
AIS
AISL
AISLE
AISLES

@@@@BOOK/SOFTWARE ORDER--DUE TOMORROW!!!

FRIDAY, AUGUST 31

@@@@GRADE PRINT OUT--EC TUESDAY:

YES!!! Today you get to see what your current grade is in Language Arts. I am so proud of everyone, as you are off to such a great start to the academic year!

If you get your parent to sign the grade print out and bring it back on Tuesday, I will give you extra credit.

@@@@BOOK ORDERS--DUE WEDNESDAY:

Do you like ordering books or sowtware from Scholastic Books? Today I passed out order forms for TAB BOOKS and CLICK SOFTWARE. If you wold like to order anything, please bring cash or a check made out to SCHOLASTIC by Wednesday.

@@@@SPELLING TEST A:

We are trying something new today...a spelling test using the circles and squares from our spelling activity. Hopefully it will help you remember the spelling much better. It will also continue to train your eyes to see patterns. Hope you do well!

@@@@SSR:

Students still are not in the habit of bringing their reading book to class, so keep practicing that. Anytime you have extra time in class (any class) you should READ!!! Most classes had almost 10 minutes to read in class today.

Thursday, August 30, 2007

THURSDAY, AUGUST 30

@@@@COMPLETE LIFE MAP:

You were to bring the LIFE MAP back to class today. You recieved it last week. It is BLUE and says "LIFE MAP" on it! You did not need to have it completed though. You have time in class today to get it completed. Remember, if there is a question that does not suit you....CHANGE THE QUESTION and answer it!

@@@@WRITE:

Here's the scoop. Today we begin what will be called WRITING LAB. Every Thursday is a writing lab day. You will eventually write at home for 30 minutes also...but that does not start yet.

Today a read aloud the first chapter of a novel we will be reading in a few week, I CAN'T BELIEVE I HAVE TO DO THIS. In this first chapter we meet Darren. He has been given a journal for a birthday present from his mother. She wants him to write once a week in his journal. He "can't believe he has to do it." The funny thing about Darren is that he starts thinking about his life....just even that one day...his birthday...is filled with tons of cool moments, interesting moments. But when he goes to write in his journal, he convinces himself he has "nothing interesting to write about." HMMMMM.....sound familiar????

Today every student was encouraged to be more honest about their lives and their creativity. You DO lead interesting lives! You do have interesting ideas and experiences! Now...write about them!

Most kids got about 15 minutes to write in class on anything they wanted to (except other class assignments).

We also created our WRITING FOLDER and set up our WRITING GOAL for Quarter 1. Here's the goal: PRODUCE WRITING. You have to have 6 pages of writing in your writing folder by October 11th. That's about 1 page per week.

@@@@SPELLING TEST A--TOMORROW:

Don't forget to study!

Wednesday, August 29, 2007

WEDENSDAY, AUGUST 29

@@@@SPELLING ACTIVITY A--DUE TODAY:

I walked around and graded this assignment for completion. I did not collect the assignment, just did a visual account. Then, we went over some of the answers, especially #4 and #7. On the last item (#7) we talked about the patterns our eyes could see in the ten spelling words. We made simple observations, like how every word begins with a vowel and most words end with a vowel.

@@@@FLASHCARDS:

This week we are just focusing on ways to study our spelling words. We are hoping to not just memorize them, but let them settle deep down into our brain in a more meaningful way.

Today you were given 10 flashcards (note cards). On the front side you were to break the work into its SYLLABLES with a dash inbetween each syllable. Also, when you write out the word, you should alternate the color of the syllable like this:

AC-CEP-TANCE

On the back of each card, you should do "stair step" or "pyramid" spelling:

A
AC
ACC
ACCE
ACCEP
ACCEPT
ACCEPTA
ACCEPTAN
ACCEPTANC
ACCEPTANCE

These are for your use. They are not an assignment.

@@@@LIFE MAP--BRING TO CLASS TOMORROW:

It does not have to be comepleted.

Tuesday, August 28, 2007

TUESDAY, AUGUST 28

@@@@BLOG:

I introduced this web site to each class today. I had everyone write the web site address in their planner. I talked through how it could be helpful to you (like if you are absent, your parents are wondering about your work, or you have forgotten something about the class). I talked about your need to remain private when your audience is the WORLD...so if you leave comments, do not use my full name when you address me and DO NOT use your full last name when you identify yourself. You can just write your first name and last initial.

Visiting the Blog and leaving a comment that identifies yourself in this manner will recieve EXTRA CREDIT this quarter.

@@@@SPELLING LISTS:

I handed out a yellow list and a hot pink list (they are identical). One list is to go home and the other list is to remain at school in your trapper or what ever folder comes to Language Arts each day. I will not give replacement lists!

@@@@SPELLING ACTIVITY A--DUE TOMORROW:

I helped everyone get started on this by doing the first half together as a class. Most classes had about 10 minutes left to continue working on the assignment. It is due tomorrow.

Monday, August 27, 2007

MONDAY, AUGUST 27

@@@@FINISH WORK FROM LAST WEEK:

Several students were not able to complete the SRI test in the library and/or have time to check out a library book. The first two objective of our class today is to accomplish the SRI Test and check out a book to read. SO....off to the library again today.

@@@@SPELLING EXPLAINED:

When we returned from the library, I explained howweekly spelling tests and review test will work. I DID NOT hand out the spelling list. I will hand those out tomorrow (if you came to BACK TO SCHOOL night, you got a preview list).

Basically, "take care of business" when you only have 10 words a week. Make a perfect score on your weekly spelling tests (three in a row) and you will not have to take the 30 word review test (that's cool!). More tips to come later...

Friday, August 24, 2007

FRIDAY, AUGUST 24

@@@@SRI (Scholastic Reading Inventory):

Today we went to the library and took a reading test. At the end of the test the computer calculated a "lexile" score for each individual. Student are now able to find books that fit their individual reading level based on this lexile score. Also, every student has the requirement of reading and passing an RC test on at least ONE RC book per quarter.

@@@LEXILE SCORE=COLORED DOT:

Some students wanted to write their lexile score inside their planners. This was optional. Every student was intructed to translate their score into the colored dot on the library wall (kind of like a chart of corresponding colors).

@@@@CHECK OUT A BOOK:

When students were finished with their SRI test they had time to look around the library and find a book to check out.

...Some students did not have time to finish the SRI test and check out a book. We will return to the library on Monday for a short time to allow every student the opportunity to complete the tasks.

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!!!

Thursday, August 23, 2007

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 23

@@@JOURNAL #3--DUE:

Good job getting those journals completed!!! Not only will you enjoy the credit you are earning, but you will also enjoy having SO much information to draw on next week when we use the journals to write our essay. This the last journal for now, so give your hand a break!

@@@@LIBRARY PRE-VIEW:

Tomorrow we will go to the library as a class for two reasons. First, you will take the SRI (Scholastic Reading Inventory) which will help you know the level at which you read. This score will also help you determine what books you should read for taking RC tests.

You will also be able to check out a book tomorrow if time allows. I would suggest checking out a book that is an RC book on your level first so that you can take care of your required RC test per quarter right away.

I brought in about 15 book s from the library and pre-viewed them for the class. We had a good time talking about reading suggestions.

@@@@LIFE MAP:

Thursdays will soon become our regular day for writing. This week we are still doing the prep work for those Thursday Writing Lab days. Today I handed out a blue paper called a LIFE MAP. The life map is filled with interesting questions meant to draw out important events and memories from your life. Once we get some of the events and memories noted on the LIFE MAP, you will use this map on Thursdays to get ideas for your writing.

PLEASE BRING THE LIFE MAP BACK NEXT THURSDAY!!!! Put it in a safe place in your binder until then! IT IS NOT HOMEWORK....you can continue to work on it next Thursday.

Wednesday, August 22, 2007

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 22

@@@@JOURNAL #2--DUE TODAY:

I walked around, face-to-face, and collected the journal from students. 99% of the journals were ready to be handed in. Good job completing your work on time!

@@@JOURNAL #3--DUE TOMORROW:

Today's journal topic is DISCUSS YOUR FRIENDSHIPS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL. You are to write a full page for 20 points. Stay on topic! I gave you a BLUE handout that has several more questions to get you thinking more about this topic. This is our last journal this week. The journal is due at the beginning of the hour on Thursday. More than half of the students were able to complete the work in class!

@@@@WRITE GOAL ON BRICK:

I look over your goals from yesterday and circled the one that I thought would be most appropriate. I handed these goals back to you in class today, along with your brick. Students simply were to transfer the goal to the brick and hand it back in before the end of class.

Tuesday, August 21, 2007

TUESDAY, AUGUST 21

@@@JOURNAL #1--DUE TODAY:

I walked around to each student and collected these---face-to-face. I only had one student in my 2nd hour not have the assignment ready to hand in today. Getting work in on times is a HUGE part of maintaining one's grade in middle school.

I spoke with each class about the late work policy--one day late = 30% off...the next day it is a zero.

@@@GOALS--In Class:

I talked through the four categories of learning in Language Arts--

1) Writing--We will write every Thrusday and 30 minutes at home every week.

2) Reading--We will be reading two novels together this year and every student must be reading independently, also. We will go to the library at least every other week for book check out.

Every student must pass one RC test per quarter for Language Arts. To earn the Reading Rewards Lunch, you will have to earn 100 points per quarter.

3) Spelling--You will have weekly spelling tests over 10 words per week. There will be opportunities to test out of spelling tests and to opt for an advanced spelling list.

4) Responsibility--Getting your work in on time is one of the most important tasks in middle school. We do allow you to hand work in one day late for 30% off, then it is a zero.

From these four categories, each student picked at least TWO categories for which to write a personal goal. I will select one of the goals the student wrote and it will be placed on the "brick" we've been making this week. Those bricks will go one the wall to serve as reminders all year.

@@@JOURNAL #2--DUE TOMORROW (8/22):

This is the second of three journals we will write this week. Today's topic is WHAT DO YOU THINK OF LEARNING/YOUR CLASSES AT EMS?? Students should write one full page and stay on topic to recieve the full 20 points. A sheet explaining the assignment along with additional questions to encourage thought on this topic was handed out to each student.
