WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 30

@@@@CHECK FLASHCARDS:

I walked around and checked each student's flashcards for list M. He/she did not hand the cards in, as I want them to be used to study for the quiz on Friday, but I count the completion as a grade.

@@@@PHINEAS GAGE p.6--15:

Today we talked through some of the questions that were written down last week before we began reading this book. Then, I read pages 6--10 aloud and asked the students to continue reading for about 10 minutes on their own. We were trying to get to page 15 today.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 29

@@@@SPELLING ACTIVITY M--DUE TOMORROW:

Today is a spelling activity day. I talked through the words on the original and advanced list. Students had close to 30 minutes to work on this activity and try to complete their flash cards. Several students completed both in class, but they were to hold on to them until tomorrow.

@@@@PHINEAS GAGE--STOP @ P. 15:

If any student completed the spelling activity and flash cards before the class was over, they were to pick up the PHINEAS GAGE book and continue reading.

MONDAY, JANUARY 28

@@@@30 MINUTE WRITING NOTE--DUE:

I walked around to collect these from each student. Very disappointing! Have them tomorrow!

@@@@LIBRARY CHECK OUT:

We do this every Monday!

@@@@GRADE PAPERS HANDED BACK:

I handed back SPELLING TEST K and L today and we placed them in our graded work folders.

@@@@PHINEAS GAGE:

YEAH!!! We did not get to this book in 2nd hour due to the need for a seating chart, but the other hours were able to begin reading this book aloud. We generally got the the part of the story when the explosion occurs!

Thursday, January 24, 2008

THURSDAY, JANUARY 24

@@@@WRITING LAB:

Just like we do every Thursday...Today I talked about the "news" of a human-like figure photographed on Mars...just to get kids thinking about things to respond to in writing!

@@@@SPELLING TEST L--TOMORROW:

Please study your flash cards!!!

Wednesday, January 23, 2008

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 23

@@@@SPELLING ACTIVITY L--DUE TODAY:

I walked around and collected the spelling activity from each student. I also looked to see that the flash cards were completed correctly.

@@@@"ROSA PARKS: MY STORY" QUIZ:

We talked about how good readers are able to see the KEY WORDS in questions. We took highlighters and talked through each of the seven questions, picking out the key words or phrases.

Then each student used the book and hunted for the correct answers.

@@@@ROSA PARKS AS A BUS DIRVER PAINTING--RESPONSE ON BACK OF QUIZ:

On the back of the quiz, students responded to the painting I brought in. The painting was done by a 1st grader at Marlatt. She has Rosa Parks driving a bus. I asked students to respond to the painting...describing what the girl got "right" about Rosa Parks, what seemed to be "wrong." Finally, students were to think symbollically about the painting. What could the bus stand for? What could be right about Rosa Parks driving the bus? Write a paragraph worth.

@@@@"I WONDER"--7 QUESTIONS/CURIOSITIES FROM PHINNEAS GAGE---ON BACK OF QUIZ:

Also on the back of the quiz, in addition to the paragraph response, you were to pick up the next book we will be reading together, Phinneus Gage. Don't read the book, but rather, flip through the pages looking at pictures, etc. and coming up with SEVEN things you wonder about or are curious about this book.

@@@@30 MINUTE WRITING NOTE--DUE:

@@@@SPELLING ACTIVITY L--DUE TOMORROW:

Students had about 30 minutes to work on this in class. About half of the students got finished with the worksheet and flash cards in class. Both are due tomorrow.

@@@@LIBRARY CHECK OUT:

We did not go as a group today, but rather, I sent individuals who needed to go to the library during class.

@@@@"ROSA PARKS: MY STORY"--FINISH TODAY:

The PRIORITY today in class is actually to finish reading thsi story! DO NOT GET DISCTRACTED and forget to complete this story today in class.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 18

@@@@GRADE PRINT OUT--EXTRA CREDIT TUESDAY:

There are only 10 total points possible right now, but many have been wondering about their grade currently. Since we have started spelling and writing back up this week, your grade will have several more scores reflected next week.

You can bring this back on Tuesday, signed by a parent, for extra credit.

@@@@30 MINUTE WRITING NOTE--DUE TUESDAY:

Write for 30 minutes at home by Tuesday and bring your note!

@@@@SPELLING TEST K:

This is our first test for the second semester. Some students are taking the advanced list and others are sticking with the original list.

@@@@FINISH READING "ROSA PARKS":

Each class has between 15 and 20 minutes to continue reading "ROSA PARKS: MY STORY." On Tuesday or Wednesday we will have a class discussion of Rosa's perspective of the civil rights movement and her participation through the bus boycotts.

Thursday, January 17, 2008

THURSDAY, JANUARY 17

@@@@SPELLING TEST K--TOMORROW:

You should still have your flash cards in hand, so I suggest you pull them out and review them a few times before tomorrow!

@@@@WRITING LAB:

Today I read some questions out of THE KID'S BOOK OF QUESTIONS. I am always trying to encourage studnets with ideas for things to write about. This book is available to students each week during WRITING LAB days on Thursdays.

@@@@@CHECK UP:

Since I had a substitute yesterday, I checked with kids about their 30 minute writing notes again today. Some kids handed one in to the sub yesterday, bit those who still had not handed one in have to stay with me over the lunch period today and complete another 20-30 minutes of writing.

Tuesday, January 15, 2008

TUESDAY, JANUARY 15

@@@@30 MINUTE WRITING NOTE--DUE:

Since there was a substitute for part of the day yesterday, I am checking for 30 minute writing notes TODAY. I walked around and marked these off on the spot infront of each student. REMEMBER...this week we are starting the extra help opportunities with each teacher. If I do not have the 30 minute writing by tomorrow for a late grade, I will have you stay in during lunch on Thursday with me and complete it.

@@@@SPELLING ACTIVITY K--DUE TOMORROW:

We are starting spelling up again. Another 100 words to go! ADVANCED SPELLING invitation decisions are due today. We will have the spelling test on Friday, as usual!

MONDAY, JANUARY 14

@@@@30 MINUTE WRITING NOTE--DUE TOMORROW :)

Because I will have a substitute in the afternoon, I am going to check the 30 minutes writing notes TOMORROW. PLease have your signatures ready tomorrow in class. If you handed the MLK, Jr. essay into the library this weekend, you will need your parents to write me a note to verify that so that I can give you 4x the pages written.

@@@@ADVANCED SPELLING INVITATION--DUE TOMORROW:

Those who tested out the of the MID TERM spelling test OR those who made an A on the Mid Term Spelling Test are invited to consider the ADVANCED SPELLING LIST for this semester. I need a decision that is signed by a parent by tomorrow. We are starting spelling again tomorrow.

@@@@LIBRARY CHECK OUT:

We are only spending a short time at the library today. Check out, re-check and take RC tests.

@@@@TWILIGHT ZONE EPISODE "THE HITCH-HIKER":

Again, since there is a Substitute in the afternoon today, I felt it would be easiest and most interesting for us to watch one more episode of the TWILIGHT ZONE. I want students to think about the role of FEAR in these episodes. Also consider whether you like reading the script first or not.

@@@@BOOK ORDERS DUE:

A couple of students indicated that they would have book orders for me today. I will mail them out tomorrow.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 11

@@@@BRAIN QUEST WINNERS QUARTER 2:

I have calculated the winners of the 2nd Quarter BRAIN QUEST challenge. Remember, this is just for fun---no points assigned to this challenge.

The winners include:

2nd hour: Mason, Brandon S., Kellsie
3rd hour: Caleb, Jack, Finn, and Breandon V.
5th hour: Ryan D., Garrett, Wesam, Olivia, Eli
6th hour Nik, Desch, Emily V.
7th hour: Darian, Josh, Natalie

WAY TO GO!!!!

@@@@MLK WRITING CONTEST:

I'm so pleased with the number of students who spent time writting this essay last night!!! AWESOME!!! Remember, if you still want to submit an essay and receive the credit for 4x the amount of writing in your writing folder, you can take it directly to the Manhattan Public Libray downtown by Sunday at 6pm. Remember these two things:

1) Make a copy of the essay so that you can place it in your writing folder. You probably won't be getting that copy back! There are copy machines in the library (10 cents a page).

2) Have your parent write me a note along with your 30 minute writing note that indicates that you handed in the essay on time.

Those of you who handed in your essay to me today, I will make a copy for your folder and you do not have to have your parents vouch for you!

@@@@30 MINUTE WRITING NOTE--DUE MONDAY:

It's that time again! You have a writing goal to start working toward so it is time to spend 30 minutes writing at home on something other than an assignment. Bring your parent's signature in on your planner or on the writing itself.

@@@@"THE MONSTERS ARE DUE..." TELEVISION EPISODE:

We watched this episode from THE TWILIGHT ZONE on DVD today. It is an episode that originally aired in the 60's. We watched carefully for the one part that strays from the script that we read in the Literature book. Of course, everyone was interested in seeing who plays the part that they read!

THURSDAY, JANUARY 10

@@@@MLK WRITING CONTEST:

I handed out a copy of this year's Martin Luther King, Jr. WRITING CONTEST information to each student. It is a little bit of a tight schedule for students to participate, but I think there is great incentive to do so....

For any student who participates in the writing contest, I will offer them 4x the pages written to count toward their writing lab goal. For instance, if their entry is one page, it will count for 4 pages toward their writing lab goal this quarter. Plus...if they do a rough draft, edit it clearly, and a final draft....they will have satisfied another portion of this quarter's writing lab goals!!!

If students want me to hand in their entry, it must be handed to me tomorrow (Friday, Jan. 11). If they need just a little more time to work on the essay, it can be hand-delivered to the public library by Sunday at 6pm.

Get more information from the Manhattan Public Library website.

@@@@QUARTER 3 WRITING LAB GOAL:

Here are the new writing goals for this quarter...

14 new pages
1 page edited using editing sheet and marking clearly
Edited page revised and taken to FINAL DRAFT

FOLDER DUE: March 6th

Remember, you have writing time every Thrusday in class and you are to be writing for 30 minutes at home each week.

@@@@WRITING LAB:

Students were given about 20 minutes to write in class today.

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 9

@@@@BOOK ORDERS--DUE FRIDAY:

I handed out book orders and Click orders. They are due on Friday.

@@@@"THE MONSTERS ARE DUE ON MAPLE STREET" p.505:

We concluded our reading of the script called, "The Monsters..." in class today. In the classes where there was time remaining, we talked through the reflection questions at the end of the selection.

There is no homework, no spelling this week, and tomorrow is a writing lab day. There WILL BE A WRITING NOTE DUE ON MONDAY, January 14.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 8

@@@@MID TERM SPELLING HANDED BACK/CLEAN OUT 2nd Q PAPERS:

I handed back assignment folders and passed back a couple of quarter 2 assignments. The most important assignment handed back today was the MID TERM SPELLING TEST. Students were instructed to keep ALL SPELLING TESTS in the assignment folder and to take all other papers HOME to show their parents. Graded Writing Folders will be seen/handed back on Thursday.

@@@@"THE MONSTERS ARE DUE ON MAPLE STREET" P. 505:

This selction is the actual script from an episode of "The Twilight Zone." We talked about who Rod Serling was, what the show was like, and then divided up the parts to read aloud in class. Each class was able to get to about page 514, or half-way through. We will finish it up in class tomorrow.

MONDAY, JANUARY 7, 2008

@@@@GRADE PRINT OUT--EC TODAY:

Most students already handed this in to Ms. C on Friday, but if you still have it and it is signed, please get that in today for extra credit.

@@@@"BROKEN CHAIN" CHARACTER ASSIGNMENT DUE:

We talked today about Alfonzo (the main character) and his physical attributes & thoughts/feelings. As a class we pretty much re-capped the story together. I gave everyone the chance to complete the assignment by the end of the hour. Again, many students had already completed it on Friday and handed it in then. At the end of the hour I walked around and collected these from each student or at least found out when they had handed it in.

@@@@LIBRARY CHECK OUT:

It is what we do every Monday. This time we speant a little bit longer in the library sice we have not been there together for about a month.
